Introduction:
This book organizes the Hawaiian fish families by their trademarks, which are most obvious to the layperson. In order to quickly locate the observed fish in this guide and identify it, it is helpful to acquire at least a very basic knowledge of terms and to note obvious markings, shape, size or behavior, while observing the fish. Try to remember if the fish you noticed was lying motionless on the bottom (On sand? On rocks? On coral?), or was it darting in and out of coral? Or perhaps it hovered several feet above the reef? If it was swimming, was it primarily using its dorsal (top) fin or the pectoral (side) fins? Once you learn how to differentiate the various fish families, it will become even easier to quickly identify each species.

Common Names provide snorklers and divers with a way of communicating in simple English. However, since common names may vary in different regions and countries, we have included the scientific names to cross reference with other marine life identification books. The Hawaiian name is included if available. The average size mentioned is at maturity of the species. The diet consists of food the particular normally feeds on. Marine life (like other wildlife) spend their time either resting or actively feeding and/or pursuing prey.
